The Situated Image
My friend Ilya was a smart kid. His amblyopia went undetected because he had memorized the eye chart to pass the school vision exam. If treated early, kids with amblyopia grow up to have perfectly corrected vision, but for Ilya it was too late. He remains permanently blind in one eye.
Seek is a gallery of obscured pictures with lenses for unobscuring them, tuned to specific eyes. Kids roam and peek, and each image appears only when the lens matches the eye of the viewer. The lenses are arranged so only the left or right eye can be used for each piece.
This exhibit turns amblyopia and low vision screening into play: the game is finding the hidden picture, and the lenses find the kids who need glasses.
